Welcome to Before and After the NLI! This week we will discuss the “before” part of the recruiting journey.
Here’s what you’ll learn today:
Quick facts to give perspective
Grades do matter
What to do before an official visit
Conference breakdowns of freshmen performances
What does it take to get a scholarship?
I won’t keep you waiting! Let’s get started.
Quick facts to get you thinking:
There are approximately 1.1 million US high school track athletes.
There are roughly 312 schools in NCAA DI track & field. About 179 D2 NCAA track & field schools. More with D3, Junior Colleges, and Community Colleges.
There are 21 events per gender in outdoor track & field.1
The max # of scholarships a DI team has is 18 full scholarships for women & 12.6 full scholarships for men.
If you think about how many athletes are on D1 track & field teams, you’ll realize how small that number actually is. NAU had 21 male distance runners and 20 women’s distance athletes for the 2023 XC season (that doesn’t include Sprints, Hurdles, or Field Events!) 44 Florida women ran in the 2023 Outdoor season. 53 Florida men ran in the 2023 Outdoor season.2
You see what I’m getting at?
I don’t want you to be discouraged. There’s a place for every level of athlete in the wide world of track & field. And I’ll give you the tools and information to help you find that right place.
