PRE-SEASON/CONDITIONING

In my first post, “Structuring the Plan,” I discussed building a plan based on 4-week blocks. I also think it is important to look at the annual plan or the full-season plan. This is true in coaching at any level. Each segment has a specific purpose and focus.

Structuring The Plan Post

I break my annual plan into four categories:

  1. Conditioning/Pre-Season—What we are talking about today!

  2. Early-Season

  3. Mid-Season

  4. Taper/Peak

The conditioning/pre-season phase is about training the body to TRAIN MORE.

How?

  • Speed

  • Power

  • Technique

If you’re coaching speed/power athletes, you need to train with speed & power. Yes, sprinters need to be aerobically strong—to increase capillaries and thus increase oxygen and work capacity—BUT don’t overthink it and certainly don’t overdo it.
