Cool Down Build-Ups | What? Why? How?
Thank you subscriber Kyle for inspiring this post!
There are several things that I have carried over from my own sprint/hurdle career to my coaching career. Our cool down technical buildups is one of them, and it is a MUST in my opinion.
Years ago, I read a study that showed two groups. The controlled group, on top of all of their work, added technical buildups as part of their training. The other group did not. The group that did technical buildups showed drastic improvement in performance. And from my experience that is true.
🚨Elite Hurdle Camp is scheduled for June 26-27, 2025!🚨
Final details coming soon!🎉
What are build-ups?
Especially after a hard day that has created fatigue, lactic acid, struggle, and challenged the group both physically and mentally, I end with technical buildups as part of the athletes’ cool down. The build-ups typically begin 3-6 minutes after the final rep of the workout. I’ll allow water, legs up, walking, changing shoes in that short time but there is NO LAYING AROUND. Coaches are known for posting the photos of their athletes draped all over the track and infield after a hard workout, which could never happen from my workouts because that immediate collapse is not even allowed. We ain’t done.
