Athletes can typically talk themselves into greatness and out of negativity.

Do what you do, don’t change it up

Sometimes (athletes and coaches) get to championship meets and feel like now they need to do something different to be great. NO! You’ve already done all the work to get there. Don’t change it up now.

For me…

  • Warmup stays the same

  • Fundamentals stay the same

  • Race strategies stay the same

  • We always cool down

Do it again. But do it against better competition.

Pre-Meet for the coach

As a coach, I always know my plan going in. Schedules, practices, and meeting outlines. Do it when you’re on the bus, on the way to the hotel, at the airport, or at home. Just do it—for you and them.

Individual meetings are important to me as well with athletes. Nothing overly long. Mental check-ins, reminders of key cues that help them in the race, lane and heat assignments. Most importantly, letting them release fears, concerns, and problems. Athletes can typically talk themselves into greatness and out of negativity if you allow them to say it out loud. Their words are often more important than ours.

Lastly, in the meetings, I only have 3 or 4 things that I talk about. I do my BEST to keep from overtaking. My goal is to give them a few things that I know will help them and stick with that. I shouldn’t be trying to solve every single issue now. And I’m definitely not giving them any new cues that they’ve never heard in practice.

They are who they are. They are what they are. Can I spark bringing their strengths to the surface in stressful moments and environments? Hopefully! That’s the goal.
